Daily schedule for sittings at the Centre

SITTINGS AT THE CENTRE HAVE RESUMED
Bookings not required after Wednesday 23 September.

Here are our sitting times at the Centre:

Formal sittings: There are six formal sittings a week at the Centre. If you have a rakusu, you are encouraged to wear it for formal sittings. Five minutes before each formal sit the large bell is struck three times. The han (wooden block) is played one minute before sitting starts. Please be in the zendo before the han plays.

  • Early mornings (Tues,Wed, Thurs 6 a.m.start): The verse of the Rakusu is said at the start of the sit. There is one 60-minute round with a bell for posture change at 30 minutes (no kinhin). On Tuesday and Thursday there is a chanting service at the end. On Wednesday morning the sit finishes with the 4 vows and 3 prostrations.

  • Tuesday evening (7 p.m. start): Two formats alternate.

    • Three 25-minute rounds with kinhin between rounds, followed by tea afterwards.

    • OR one 25-minute round of sitting plus teisho (a talk from Sensei). Tea afterwards

Both Tuesday evening formats include a short chanting service.

  • Thursday evening (7 p.m.start): There are three 35-minute rounds with kinhin (walking meditation) between rounds. We finish with the 4 vows and 3 prostrations.

  • Sunday morning (8.30 a.m. start): The verse of the Rakusu is said at the start of the sit. There are three 35-minute rounds with kinhin (walking meditation) between rounds. We finish with the 4 vows and 3 prostrations. Cup of tea afterwards.

Informal sittings: There are three informal sits a week at the Centre (Tues,Wed, Thurs, noon start). You can meditate for all or just part of the period and can change positions as needed. Five minutes before the start of each informal sit the large bell is struck three times. The start of the sitting is not marked but the inkin bell is rung at the end of the period and we bow seated then stand and bow to each other to finish the meditation. No need to book for the informal sittings.
