Auckland’s first online sesshin will get underway at 7 pm on Friday, 21 August with a tea ceremony, Sensei’s opening words, and zazen.

For the sake of participants who will be sharing a house with others, with the responsibilities that are embedded in household living—a partner, one or more family members, one or more pets—the daily schedule is somewhat lighter than at our standard sesshins at Bella Rakha. It begins a bit later each morning and includes longer break periods.

Access to dokusan will be limited to those who are registered and attending at least two blocks each day. People who are not registered for the sesshin may still “drop in” to the sittings, but without going to dokusan. Membership of, or participation in, a Cloud-Water Sangha (AZC or RZC) is required.

If you are considering participation in the sesshin, the following page from the RZC website will give you a feel for the process: https://www.rzc.org/sesshins-meditation-retreats/setting-up-for-online-sesshin/

Once you’ve registered, you’ll be expected to be present for all of the blocks you have committed to. This will give some fibre to what is otherwise a fairly allowing schedule. If you know before sesshin that you have to change the commitments you recorded on your application (due to an appointment, for example) let us know so we can update our records (email info@aucklandzen.org.nz). And if after sesshin has begun you find that, due to unforeseen circumstances, you have to miss one or more rounds of a block for which you signed up, please notify the host (via Zoom chat) as soon as possible.

To be eligible for dokusan on a given day, you must apply for the sesshin (here) and attend at least two of the four blocks on that day.

As in a traditional sesshin, the rounds of sitting will be interspersed with short periods in which to do kinhin (formal walking zazen) or otherwise practice zazen in activity.

Registering/Applying to attend

Apply online here. If you plan to attend part-time, note which blocks you’re signing up for. The new deadline for applications is noon Wednesday 19 August.

Payment for remote sesshin will be on a dana basis, with a suggested amount of $120 for five days full time 0r $30 per day. Whether full time or just dropping in, contribute whatever feels appropriate. Sesshin is one of our income streams for the Centre, and it usually yields a modest surplus, so if you are able to contribute something, it will help keep the Centre going. Internet transfers may be made to Auckland Zen Centre, Kiwibank #38 9005 035812500 (please specify Sesshin dana in the reference field).
