Covid-19 AZC Response March 2020

Update 24 March

The government has announced that New Zealand is now at COVID-19 Alert Level 3. The country will shift to Level 4 (the highest alert level) at midnight Wednesday 25 March and is likely to stay at Level 4 for at least a month.

At Alert Levels 3 and 4, the Centre is closed, in line with Government requirements.
The focus for staff and Trustees through this time is providing ongoing support for Sangha through on-line content, Facebook, regular email updates and individual contact by phone  or Skype.

  • Streamed sittings: Sensei and Robin will continue to hold all scheduled sittings (separately, each at home) and will be streaming all sittings on Mixlr. Anyone with internet access can click on the Mixlr link at the scheduled time to hear the sitting.
  • Skype dokusan: Sensei is offering weekly for any Auckland members. This is in addition to the regular Wednesday Skype dokusan for out-of-Auckland Sangha, which will continue. Members can email Sensei to request a Dokusan time.
  • Zoom discussion times: The first Zoom discussion will be on Tuesday 31 March. After the streamed sitting (7 p.m. start as usual) we will have a Zoom discussion to give all members a chance to talk together. More details to follow.

At Alert Levels 3 & 4 we also

  • Encourage the use of on-line dharma resources (e.g. Tricycle podcasts)

  • Plan to activate Kannon network to support anyone in self-isolation at home who can not access groceries or medicines.

At Alert Levels 1 and 2 the Centre is able to offer sittings provided we take necessary precautions.

At Alert Level 2 our precautions are likely to include the following (note that these will be reviewed before we resume sittings):

At Alert Level 2 we focus on prevention through modified Zendo etiquette:

  • Stay home if you fit into any of the higher risk categories.

Groups at higher risk include:

  • older people
  • Māori and Pacific people, who are more seriously impacted by respiratory diseases
  • people who are immune-compromised, such as people with cancer
  • people who have pre-existing conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes or hypertension

  • Stay home if you are unwell.

  • Stay home if you are a health care worker.

  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or cover your mouth and nose with tissues.

  • Put used tissues in a bin immediately.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often.

  • Avoid physical contact, keep a distance of 1 metre away from other people. If closer than 1 metre, limit contact time to no longer than 15 minutes.

Other things we do at the Centre at Alert Level 2:

  • The use of loaner robes is discontinued.

  • People are asked to take their own robes home, wash them as needed and bring them to the Centre each time they sit.

  • Standing bows only (no prostrations).

  • Shared meals (breakfast and lunches) are discontinued.

  • Shared tea after sittings is discontinued.

  • Clean cups for drinking water are provided and used cups washed daily on hot cycle.

  • Cushions in the zendo are moved to 1 metre apart.

  • Frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as taps and doorknobs are regularly disinfected.

  • Soap and paper towels are in the bathrooms and kitchen to facilitate hand washing and drying.

  • Hand sanitiser is in the foyer for people coming in.

  • Up-to-date health advice is provided around the Centre.

  • All attendees are recorded for each sitting, and contact details collected if not already held.

  • Ministry of Health guidelines are checked daily for updates and our response is updated as needed.

At all Alert Levels we closely follow the Ministry of Health Guidelines for public gatherings
