Introduction to Zen Buddhism

2008 dates yet to be announced.....

The course will provide students with an introduction to the Zen school of Buddhism, tracing its beginnings in India and its development into two great cultural flowerings, first in China and then in Japan.  In addition to an outline of the principles of Zen Buddhism, we will explore the lives and teachings of several of the great Chinese and Japanese Zen masters, the influence of Zen on the traditional arts of Japan, and the current-day burgeoning of Zen in the Western world.  A field trip to a functioning urban temple will provide participants with some direct experience of Zen.
